I was asked for my phone number and address at SEARS even though I was paying cash. What's that about?

Wow, that's really messed up. When I get asked for stuff like that I give fake info.

Mailing list. Sears has asked me for that too. I was part of some Craftsman club thing that I didn't know about because of it. If any store asks you for your phone number or any info, you can always just say 'no thank you'. I always do when they ask me for my phone number.

I've been asked for my phone #, zip code, driver's license...but not my address...that's overboard

You do not have to give out any information. and rest assured they will go far with whatever information you give them. they can do a pretty thorough search with that information so you want to beware! many years back i was shopping in eaton's and wrote a cheque to pay for my purchases [which i had been doing for years]. i noticed the cashier running my cheque through a slot in the register and asked her what she was doing. she said she was just letting the register know a cheque was received. i asked her if she was scanning my account, she said no, i called for a manager and questioned him. after several minutes of hedging he finally confessed that yes eaton's had access through their bank to all banks and guess what, they were scanning my account for funds. now, i had the funds, no worries, my concern was my bank had given eaton's access to the bank's computers so they could scan my account. eaton's didn't see why i was upset, they lost me as a customer that very day, when i went to the bank and questioned them about it they started giving me some stupid longwinded story and they lost all our business that day!
