The actual check only takes a few minutes, with the proper software, however companies out-source the background checks to places who do this for profit. It can take anywhere from 2 days to two weeks, depending upon the backlog the checking company has existing.

It depends on how many convictions you have. The police officer will ask you if you have ever appeared before a court - local, state, federal, supreme, high court; both civil and criminal and in which states the convictions were made. Then they will run your full name through the court registries on their computer. If you have omitted to tell them of the time say (for instance) you through a rock through the window of a place you rented because you locked yourself out and the owner unknown to you lived next door and had you arrested and it was brought before the local court; but the case was dropped; Then the police officer can rightly assume that you may be lying about other convictions. In such a scenario it may be delayed. My police check for my nursing registration and working with children check, took a couple of seconds.

My company does it by mail to the SBI and it takes about a week.
